Two Lives is a hybrid dungeon-crawler/platformer in which you venture into, then attempt to escape a procedurally generated labyrinth, switching between two different perspectives.

This is a small prototype that uses placeholder art and sounds, available for free.

How to play

Either play right in the browser above (remember to hit the fullscreen button) or download for Windows or Linux. (The Windows binary is unsigned and you will get a security warning.)

Use a keyboard or controller. The basic controls are explained in the lower left corner.

Experiment to see what else happens. Don't be discouraged if you die: runs are short and good learning experiences. Every time you restart, the game will show a random tip explaining more advanced mechanics. It is possible to see a "You Win!" screen when you beat the game - if you see any other ending then you have not completed the game.

Tips (spoilers)

If you don't want to wait until you see all the tips in the game, they are presented below. However, reading them all may spoil the fun of discovering the mechanics through play.

  • Sometimes it pays to keep chests closed.
  • Altars sometimes spawn monsters when you open a door.
  • Pay attention to the way enemies attack and exploit it to avoid being hit.
  • Monsters that spawn from altars do not drop gems.
  • Holding Jump (Space/A) while in the air activates the jetpack, which costs a gem.
  • Getting hit by a laser costs a gem.
  • You can manually use the "Give Up" option on the menu, or long-hold Enter/Y.
  • Interesting things happen as you venture further away from the portal.
  • When you "Give Up", each heart of health converts to a gem.
  • Every chest you open becomes a live turret.
